First look at Land of the Dead zombies

3rd Dec 04

First look at <b>Land of the Dead</b> zombies At last, there seems to be some news filtering from George Romero's Land of the Dead shoot, currently filming in Toronto. As well as a recent cast list published by Moviesonline (see More Information below for details), there have also been postings of the script (since removed from most sites), photos of the truck 'Dead Reckoning' and now finally we have some pictures of the actual zombies themselves (see http://www.moviesonline.ca/ for more images).

The shot (above) was taken from an article published recently on http://www.usatoday.com by Susan Wloszcyna, who writes about her 'zombie extra' experiences on the film.

"I'm in a zombie movie. Not just any zombie movie, but Land of the Dead, directed and written by a man who has done more for the deceased than embalming fluid, Forest Lawn and HBO's Six Feet Under put together. To be in a George Romero zombie film, his first in almost 20 years, is like being in a Clint Eastwood Western or a Martin Scorsese gangster epic. It doesn't get much better than this."

We'd be lying if we said we weren't jealous. As well as confirming some elements of the script (the zombies are learning to use weapons, although they still move slowly, and can be stopped), there is also a Flash gallery of Susan's make-up procedure, including a photo of Romero behind the camera.

Romero also spoke to the NY Times recently, and revealed more of the plotline: "The fat cats live in a high-security complex called Fiddler's Green, which the director is conjuring inside BCE Place, an indoor office and shopping mall here with a futuristic, vaulted ceiling that makes it look like a true cathedral of commerce. On the outside, zombie hordes roam almost unimpeded throughout the earth. People are aware of what's going on outside, and they're willing to listen to a government entity calling Fiddler's Green a safe haven, but it's not really providing everything they need. So some of the protagonists have to go out into the real world to get things like food - and deodorant."

Shaun of the Dead star Simon Pegg was also recently interviewed about his cameo role in the film: "We did it last week. It was fantastic. We went over to Canada and we were in make-up for two or three hours and got made up as zombies. It was like an episode of 'Jim'll Fix It', it was just amazing. [The] Zombies don't actually speak. I was offered a speaking part in the film, but I turned it down. I didn't get to be a zombie in 'Shaun of the Dead', so this was my big chance. So I said I didn't want to be be a speaking actor in this big Hollywood film. I said I'd rather groan and stumble and be unrecognisable."

Land of the Dead has a $17million budget is being released by Universal (US) and has a Stateside release date of October 21st 2005. No UK date has yet been scheduled.

Maybe that’s harsh, because in a crappy, low budget 70’s movie kind of way, it really works.
