Co-Frightfest organiser, Fangoria journalist and all round Argento expert Alan Jones has revealed that there are three brand new Dario Argento DVDs on the way; Trauma, The Card Player and the classic Giallo The Bird With The Crystal Plumage.
Anchor Bay are set to release Trauma and The Card Player (hopefully around August 23rd Region 1 fans!) whilst Blue Underground are giving The Bird the double-disc treatment - although there is currently no official release date. Alan Jones was asked to record audio commentaries for each disc, and had this to say to Fangoria (see here);
"[Trauma] was the hardest of all, because [my location visit] was over 10 years ago and I really had to think intensely about anecdotes and on-set stories. My prompter was Mark Kermode — who will not be heard on the soundtrack at his request. He felt his knowledge of Dario was limited, so he preferred to jog me along rather than have an informal conversation together. Mark did the same on The Card Player, which was much easier to do because it’s all still vividly in my memory."
“I enjoyed doing The Bird With The Crystal Plumage the most. Writer Kim Newman and I just had a good time talking about the genesis, facts, trivia and impact it had. Kim brought in his krimi knowledge, and we charted how the giallo was born from that German horror strand. That’s the one I can’t wait to hear back. Kim and I really sparked off each other, and I don't think there is some second of silence. I’d love to have feeback on these to see if the fans think they're OK.”
Alan Jones is without a doubt the world's leading expert on Dario Argento, and has published Profondo Argento, the definitive guide to the Italian director. You can buy this book from www.fabpress.com.
