 Now this is looking like it's going to be the cult film of 2006, especially after viewing the amazing trailer for Richard Linklater's live action / animation sci-fi mind-bender, A Scanner Darkly. To view the stunning two minutes of gorgeous animation, click on the link here.
A Scanner Darkly is based on a Phillip K. Dick novel (like Total Recall and Blade Runner) and 'stars' Keanu Reeves, Woody Harrelson, Winona Ryder and Robert Downey Jr. I say 'stars' as Linklater has returned to the technique previously used in Waking Life whereby he filmed the actors before turning the footage into animation.
But what beautiful animation it is too. One of the problems with Waking Life was the constant shift of animation styles, but this film seems to have gone for just the one style, a higly designed look with lots of computer effects giving it a feel of sci-fi Manga, with an American sheen.
The film will be released on 7th July in the US. No official UK date has been released as yet.

Plot Synopsis: Seven years from now, a new highly addictive drug called Substance D emerges. The main side effect of Substance D is that is causes split personalities on all those who use it.
Drug cop Fred (Keanu Reeves) is working undercover to catch Bob a big-time drug dealer. Little does he realise that he is chasing himself, as Bob is really just one of Fred's many personalities.
